"A child raised by one home is welcomed into the next by both — a marriage joins not two people, but two families bound by respect, story, and the giving of gifts."

Isintu
Umtimba — The Bride's Family

Khumalo

of Mbumbulu

Nokwanda is the firstborn daughter of MaKhumalo, granddaughter of the late Mkhulu Bhekisisa. She brings with her the stories, the strength, and the prayers of her mother's home.

&
Umkhwenyana — The Groom's Family

Mthethwa

of Empangeni

Lwazi is the eldest son of Baba Mthethwa, raised under the watch of his uncles and the wisdom of his grandmother. He comes today with humility, with respect, and with abelusi to speak on his family's behalf.

The proceedings

The order of the day

i.
Arrival of the umkhwenyana
The groom's family arrives by 9am and is received at the gate. Tea is served while the senior men gather.
ii.
Izithakazelo — the praises
Each family recites their lineage. The bride remains inside with her aunts.
iii.
Iziswazi — the negotiations
The two sets of abelusi sit together. The umtimba's terms are heard. The umkhwenyana's offer is presented.
iv.
Ukubonisa — the showing
The cattle and gifts are brought forward. The bride is called to be presented to the elders.
v.
Idina — the feast
Once the elders are satisfied, the two families share a meal. Slaughtering, eating, dancing. The evening goes long.
A note on respect

This is a family matter.

This ceremony is for the immediate families and the abelusi appointed to represent them. We ask that no photographs be taken inside the home during proceedings, and that traditional dress be worn where possible.

If you have been called to speak on behalf of either family, please present yourself to MaKhumalo or Baba Mthethwa upon arrival.
